Fruitport is located on the southern border of Muskegon County at the very end of the north branch of Spring Lake, which contains Cornelius and Stahl Bayous. This scenic town includes a park on the lake, adjacent to the center of town, where one can watch the boats coming to visit.

This town was originally founded by Edward L. Craw in 1868, who named it after himself as Crawville. It was renamed Fruitport a year later when the Pere Marquette Railroad built a station there, as the town was in the middle of a fertile fruit growing area and also a port. It eventually was incorporated as a village in 1869.
