Hesperia is located on the Newaygo/Oceana County border at the junction of M-20 and M-120, with approximately half the town in each county. This picturesque community is situated on the White River, which flows on the north end, complete with dam, swimming area and mill pond. This town is supported primarily by local businesses and some tourism, including canoeing and fishing.

The first settler to the area was Booth Perry in 1856. Pat McFarland and Alex McLaren (for whom McLaren Lake is named) came in 1858. In 1866 Hesperia was platted and John Cook and Dan Weaver built a sawmill and a general store.

A post office was registered in 1867. The town was incorporated as a village in 1883. It was named by resident Mary Cook because of its resemblance to a garden. Also, legend has it that the name 'Hesperia' means "western land" and Hesperia certainly fits the western land definition.
