Petersburg is a small, rural community located near the western border of Monroe County, about two miles west of US-23, in Summerfield Township. It is supported primarily by agriculture and small business, functioning as well as a commuter town to the greater Adrian, Monroe and Toledo, Ohio areas. A point of interest includes some old railroad trestle and bridge ruins to the west of town, on the River Raisin.

Petersburg was named after Richard Peters, who, moving here in 1824, bought a farm, and later sold some of the property to found the town in 1836. Peters became the first postmaster, originally naming it Summerfield, after the township. In 1863, it was named Petersburgh; 30 years later the spelling was changed to Petersburg. It eventually was incorporated as a village in 1869, and later as a city in 1969.
