Ravenna is located in Ravenna township in the northeastern corner of Muskegon County. This is a small agricultural community that also plays a role as a commuter city to both Grand Rapids and Muskegon.

Ravenna was first settled in 1844 when E. B. Bostwick built a sawmill here. Other early settlers included Benjamin Smith, (who built the first house), and William Rogers, Thomas Smith, James Rollinson and Hiram Wilkinson. The city and township were named after Ravenna, Ohio in 1848, the home of the surveyor who platted the land. The town was incorporated into a village in 1922.
