Atlanta - Briley Township Population: 2000() 1990() Change()
Atlanta is located in the center of Montmorency County as the county seat in Briley Township. This town was named after the city in Georgia by Civil War veteran, Alfred J. West, who became the first postmaster here in 1882.
Atlanta has survived both because of its position as the county seat and its location to prime hunting and fishing areas surrounding it. It is famous for its status as the 'Elk Capital of Michigan', because of the large elk herd, 500-600 strong, that roams the land in the surrounding Thunder Bay River State Forest.
This town is also situated on the Thunder Bay River, complete with dam and scenic park area just to the south of town. It is easily accessed at the junction of M-33 and M-32. |
